May Day Bike Run 2015
We normally end up in traffic caused by the May Day Bike run. This year we remembered it was on and parked the car! A few of the local pubs and restaurants opened early and there was a real buzz (and a lot of noise) about the event.
Why is my wordpress site so slow?!
Quick answer: I had Jetpack installed and it was serving my images from wordpress servers and not my own.
I’m no Wordpress expert, but I know a few things about hosting. This little blog was running way too slow for its size (and that it’s hosted by the ever speedy unitedhosting!) So I set about deleting plugins, themes and just about anything I didn’t need. And there was a lot to remove – the usual curse of tech over substance. Nothing seemed to impact. And in the midst of this cleanse, I realised all my pictures seemed to be hosted on a different website (if I clicked on them, it took me to a page starting i0.wp.com/. It seems when the Jetpack plugin is installed, and you used the mosaic gallery, images are served from the Worpress Content Delivery Network (CDN). Which is odd.
Jetpack was the last plugin for the chop, and after hitting the kill switch, my site suddenly starting responding much more quickly. As my sites mainly made up of images, it was the pictures hosted on the CDN that were slowing things down. Which is the exact opposite of what should be happening. So the lesson learned? Don’t use Jetpack if your host is super quick! Also, I’m not sure I like the fact that wordpress were uploading my images to their server (I’m sure it’s covered by the terms I didn’t read when I installed Jetpack).
CSCC season review
I love it when a chance encounter leads to something more. After watching my Team 309’s Brand Hatch video, I was asked me to put together a season review video for the CSCC. It’s a collection of onboard footage and stuff filmed by the teams that tells the story of the 2014 season. Great fun putting it together for the club, which got a great reception at their end of year dinner. Thoroughly recommend anyone interested in motor racing to go to one of the 2015 meetings. The noise from the special saloons is incredible, and there’s some great racing throughout the series. It’s also great getting up close and personal with the teams and their cars in the paddock and the pits.
More Brands Hatch racing fun
I’ve had the luxury of editing some non-family video for a change. And as a nice reward, Ricky and Danny posted my little video on their 309 Thunder Saloon Facebook page. These videos are by far the most watched of any of my Vimeo videos.
Let’s go racing!
Despite living only 20 minutes away, I gad my first experience of Brands Hatch on Saturday. What a great way to spend the day! For the £14 entrance fee, you’re treated to a feature packed day of racing (the Classic Sports Car Cub were racing). Such a friendly bunch of people and you get so close to the action. Thoroughly recommended.
